The 57 Sofa was the first of Finn Juhl’s designs to be relaunched by House of Finn Juhl, marking the beginning of an extraordinary partnership and collaboration with Finn Juhl's widow, Hanne Wilhelm Hansen. The sofa’s sculptural silhouette is defined by smooth, clean lines, and the tall armrests curve around the seat, creating a cosy and comfortable space. With its pioneering design, the 57 Sofa remains as relevant today as ever. The 57 Sofa is upholstered by hand in Denmark in either textile or leather, and the seat is spring-filled. The legs are available in either burnished or stainless steel, and they feature wooden toes in walnut or oak.
Finn Juhl’s widow, the music- and theatre publisher Hanne Wilhelm Hansen, wanted this sofa to be part of an exhibition marking the 10th anniversary of Finn Juhl’s passing. She therefore approached House of Finn Juhl and commissioned a single issue of the sofa based on his drawings. This marked the beginning of a lasting partnership with Hanne Wilhelm Hansen, who subsequently granted House of Finn Juhl the exclusive rights to manufacture Finn Juhl’s furniture.
The 57 Sofa was exhibited for the very first time in the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen in 1957, and more than 40 years were to pass before the world found favour with Finn Juhl’s extravagant design. The sculptural silhouette of the 57 Sofa is defined by smooth, clean lines, forming an inviting and spacious seating space. With tall armrests embracing the seat thus creating a nestled area of comfort, the 57 Sofa is truly a unique and playful design.

DESIGNED BY
Finn Juhl
Rather than thinking in terms of practical construction, Finn Juhl had the mind-set of a sculptor, when he shaped a piece of furniture. In the 1940s and 1950s, this way of working had never been seen before. His ambition was to design furniture with movement and life. Finn Juhl took pride in making both the structurally supportive elements of the furniture and the seated person look as though they are floating.
