Finn Juhl designed the Wilhelm Hansen Bed in 1961 as part of a bedroom interior dedicated to his partner, Hanne Wilhelm Hansen. The bedroom was one of the most personal and unconventional projects of Finn Juhl's career and marked a new direction in his design career. The colourful and graphic bed is crafted from cherry wood with details in wengé as well as an internal frame and slats in pine wood.
The Wilhelm Hansen Bed is the central piece of furniture in the bedroom interior. The sculptural construction is made from cherry wood with wengé details, combining organic forms with a light, almost floating appearance. The sides and headboard, along with the drop-shaped detail on the footboard, feature painted areas inspired by Goethe's theories of colour. The same colour scheme is reflected in the drawers of the Glove Cabinet.
Finn Juhl's bedroom interior from 1961 was both an expression of love and a bold departure from the design ideals of its time. When it was launched, it marked a turning point in Finn Juhl's career. The furniture series was his final contribution to the Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition, which closed just five years later – bringing an end to a remarkable era in which Finn Juhl had been one of its most influential figures.

DESIGNED BY
Finn Juhl
Rather than thinking in terms of practical construction, Finn Juhl had the mind-set of a sculptor, when he shaped a piece of furniture. In the 1940s and 1950s, this way of working had never been seen before. His ambition was to design furniture with movement and life. Finn Juhl took pride in making both the structurally supportive elements of the furniture and the seated person look as though they are floating.
